First Signs of Spring
With signs of Spring starting to show – slightly lighter evenings and flowers starting to bloom, you may be seeing the same signs on your GrufeKit green roof or be thinking about adding a green roof to increase the signs of Spring in your home!
There are many reasons why Spring is the perfect season for a GrufeKit green roof and why it is one of the best seasons to fully admire all its beauty and in particular, our Sedum & Wildflower GrufeKit green roofs are really beautiful in Spring and a great option to consider for your green roof.
Whilst our Sedum GrufeTiles are green and luscious all year round, you will find that our Sedum & Wildflower GrufeTiles will really burst into colour during the Spring and Summer. The addition of the wildflower in this GrufeTile will make your green roof the ultimate bio-diverse green roof.
The addition of a green roof and a wildflower roof, particularly in cities, will massively increase the habitats available to birds, bees, butterflies, and insects. Specific plant mixes can also be planted to bring local plants back to the environment and other features such as log piles, rocks, bird baths, insect hotels and beehives can be included to boost the ecological impact of the green roof.
If you are wondering whether you should go for a Sedum & Wildflower green roof rather than a Sedum green roof, then there are a couple of things to consider:
1. Maintenance
Where Sedum is a hardy, low growing evergreen plant, it requires little maintenance and is the foundation of our green roof system. The Sedum GrufeTiles therefore require very little maintenance, but the Wildflower & Sedum green roof need a little more to keep them at their best. This is still not heavy maintenance, just a strim of the wildflowers at the end of the summer and the removal of any weeds to keep it at its best.
2. Appearance
When deciding whether a Wildflower green roof is the one for you, the desired look is something to consider.
Sedum is a hard-wearing plant, which will offer a luscious green colour all year round. As this is also mixed in with the Sedum & Wildflower green roof, you will also have this long-lasting green, but you will see bursts of colour throughout the Spring and Summer which will give you more variety.
However, the wildflowers will die back in the Autumn and Winter, leaving you with browner patches. So, this is definitely one part to consider when picking your GrufeKit green roof.
The Sedum & Wildflower GrufeTile Explained:
Vegetation: Consists of a mix of 20-30 wildflower and meadow grass varieties and 8-12 varieties of Sedum. Sedums are hardy, low growing, evergreen plants that look after themselves in the main.
Soil: The media mix (aka soil) used is a special substrate prepared specifically for the GrufeTile, but particular mixes can also be prepared depending on the planting and project requirement.
Carrier: Made from recycled Polypropylene, the carrier performs the following roles – a water reservoir, drainage layer, protection from excessive drying of roots from the airspace below, whilst the cups greatly improve product handling making it easier to install.
Installation: The GrufeTile is equipped with a nifty double-action coupling system: the tabs on the side of each part engage the edge in the gaps between tabs of the facing part, making installation easy.
With both the Sedum and Sedum & Wildflower GrufeTiles being amazing options for your green roof, the Sedum & Wildflower will look particularly aesthetically beautiful at this time of year, as well as contributing to improving biodiversity in your area.
